HISTORY

Meltonville Missionary Baptist Church was organized on October 19, 1870, under the leadership of Reverend Joe Ratliff. Like many Black churches established after the Civil War, the church derives its name from the Meltonville Methodist Academy, a church school that once stood nearby.

The Meltonville Methodist Academy was located northwest of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where many of Meltonville’s founding members originally worshiped. In 1875, the Wilson Chambers family donated the land on which the church would be built.

The first church building was constructed in 1877 and served as the congregation’s place of worship. A second structure was completed in 1925 and remained in use until August 2005. In September 2005, that building was demolished to make way for a new church facility continuing Meltonville’s legacy of faith, growth, and worship.
